A flock's performance is decided the day the breeders are chosen. What to check, from genetics to health records.
In turkey farming, productivity, feed conversion and flock health depend heavily on the breeders you start with. Making up for a poorly chosen flock later through management and nutrition is both difficult and costly. These are the six criteria we recommend checking before buying breeder turkeys.
1. Genetic line and records
You should know which genetic line the birds come from and what that line was developed for, whether egg production, growth rate or carcass yield. A supplier who keeps proper records can also share the performance of the parent flocks.
2. Health status and official documents
The farm of origin should be officially registered and inspected by the competent authorities. Ask for the vaccination program, disease-free status and veterinary health certificates before delivery.
3. Conformation and gait
A healthy breeder stands upright on straight, strong legs. Lameness, leg deformities or footpad lesions point to future problems with both productivity and welfare.
4. Uniformity
Weight variation within the flock should be low. A uniform flock comes into lay at the same time, which makes hatchery planning much easier.
5. Feathers and eyes
Glossy, even plumage and bright, clear eyes are the easiest visible signs of good health. Feather loss, eye discharge or soiling around the nostrils needs attention.
6. Supplier consistency
Buying breeders is not a one-off purchase. A supplier who delivers the same quality every cycle, offers technical support and is reachable when problems arise matters as much as the birds themselves.
